New American Idioms. This month’s idiom : “NOT MUCH”, compliments of a presidential candidate

Mitt Romney and Colleagues displaying their core motivational factors.
WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney has a new definition of "not much": $374,327.00 .
On Tuesday, the Republican presidential candidate finally admitted that the effective tax rate he has been paying for the last several years is likely well below that of middle-class workers.
In Greenville, S.C., Romney was asked directly what his effective tax rate is. It was a hot topic of discussion at Monday night's debate, at which Romney repeatedly declined to fully commit to release his tax returns.
"It's probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything," said Romney on Tuesday. "For the past 10 years, my income comes overwhelmingly from investments made in the past, rather than ordinary income or earned annual income. I got a little bit of income from my book, but I gave that all away. Then, I get speakers fees from time to time, but not very much."
Not very much? According to his personal financial disclosure, from February 2010 to February 2011, Romney earned $374,327.62 in speaking fees. A few months later, Romney joked that he was "unemployed."
His rival, Newt Gingrich, said that he made $60,000 per speech -- defending himself against the charge that he served as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac, for which he was paid over $1.6 million for strategic advice.
Romney has an estimated wealth of between $190 million to $250 million, according to financial disclosure reports. Upon leaving Bain Capital in 1999, he negotiated a retirement package guaranteeing him a percentage of the firm's profits.
A single worker who earns more than $35,350 in income pays a 25 percent tax rate on earnings above that amount. Many families that earn less than $100,000 per year pay an effective rate of just above that, according to the Congressional Research Service.
The Huffington Post's Jon Ward asked Romney about his tax rate in Iowa last December. "You take advantage of the opportunity to be in America, to build a bright future, and you pay your taxes as required by law," he said. "And if something is a capital gain, it should be treated as a capital gain. If something is ordinary income, it should be treated as ordinary income. And the determination of those things has been made by Congress and by the courts and by the Internal Revenue Service. I've always followed the law as to the taxes that we've paid, my wife and I have paid."

Romney's wealthy welfare comes from a loophole in the tax code that taxes long-term capital gains at a 15 percent rate. Private equity executives are then "paid" with capital gains instead of regular income. The executives, such as Romney, then tell the Internal Revenue Service that they were not being reimbursed a salary for work they performed but instead were merely investors reaping the rewards of risk taking. Happily for the executives, any investments that go belly up and lead to bankruptcy and mass layoffs can be counted against the earnings, which amounts to a tax subsidy for failed projects.
Should someone who considers "occasional speaker’s fees" of $ 374,327.00, “not much”, have the privilege to represent 99% of US Citizens, many of whom have an annual salary of 1/100th of what he considers “not much” ?
This story has been updated to reflect Romney's speaking fees according to his financial disclosure.

Exceptionalism That Doesn't Count

The advisors to President Obama once again prove that they are intent on measuring what doesn't count. I say the "advisors" because I cannot believe a person as savvied and dedicated to global unity as our president, the person for whom my whole family voted, would use such exceptionalism laden words at a University event.

President Obama, at the University of Texas, yesterday, called for the nation to
"lead the world in college graduation".

This seems to me selective, shallow and convenient exceptionalism, at best; a patriotic stimulant to achieve intellectual nothingness

Besides the fact that the number of people graduating is a meaningless metric of quality output, if we must be exceptional, then why not lead by example and urge the Country instead, to "lead the world" in (and measure):

- health care for all of our society

- free and accessible College study for all memmbers of our society

- commitment to peace by stopping military aid to various puppet nations we support.

- commitment to peace by closing all of our military bases which occupy foreign nations

- commitment to peace by no longer engaging in wars/invasions/missions, of occupation

- becoming the leader in true nature conservancy and pollution free environments

- not controlling/spinning/ media and truly supporting free speech and peaceful petition

- admitting that there no such thing as "clean coal"

- arresting our own war criminals, even if they are rich, government dignitaries

- arresting corporate thieves and economic criminals, even if they are mostly white, well connected, powerful and have sacks 'o gold at their disposal

- admitting that even our forefathers were "illegal immigrants", hence we all are!

- closing torture-based establishments that are uncivilized emblems of all that is counter to the Constitution of the Land

- stopping the obsequious and incestuos relationships with the self serving lobby army of pharmaceuticals, insurers, banking empires, corporate oil barons, arms contractors etc, which drain the economy and which are the causal connectors attached to our nation's current apocalyptic mess

When some day we muster up the humility and courage to want to measure the indicators above, then perhaps we will be in a position to measure what counts.
Because what we are currently counting measures only one thing: exceptional GREED.

AFGHANISTAN ROCKS

Last night the US and the Pentagon announced that they have just uncovered vast amounts of minerals in Afghanistan, possibly worth TRILLIONS of US Dollars…AND the US has volunteered to help the Afghan government extract the minerals, because,-get this!:- …: Afghanistan’s infrastructure is inadequate to support major mining work

Allow me to share a couple of simple reactions to this bit of cozy news:

1) W T F?!!! (What Terrific Find...)
Ok…
2) I now realize how industrious the war complex is: as we invade and occupy, we also engage in altruistic geological inquisition; it makes sense, because the craters created by our bombs are ready made geological research sites, thus greatly diminishing the need for extensive digging; furthermore, the findings could greatly help the primitive locals. And…as the primary invaders we have automatic permission and primary rights to do whatever geological poking, excavating, experimenting, we like. We are indeed the deciders and who knows, we may find even additional buried wealth, to help the locals.

3) Amazing technology and precision instrumentation and brilliance of minds we have, between the Pentagon and the Army…to find, isolate and identify with precision, buried mineral treasures, estimate its locations, depths, cubic portent and economic value, and in a distant land no less!; however, we still cannot plug an oil leak in our own country

4) Equally fascinating is that the US government expressed the estimated value of the Afghanistan minerals in US Dollars (I guess we already own it…)…at the very least, why not Euros, since the Euro is stronger than the dollar?...wait a minute, there is a currency in Afghanistan, too! OK, OK, it’s about real strength and our real strength is GREED, which is really stronger than anything; so it has to be in dollars! …sometimes I forget.

GoldSacks: Guilty Of Fraud! Today...What do you think will happen?

Two months ago I protested in front of Goldman Sachs because I believed that Wall Street had inflicted a deep wound to America, the country, America the People. I couldn't take it any more! I took to the street alone. Goldman Sachs was one of the malicious inflictors of pain and destructions, who went about their business unscathed ;Hailed as the financial power house “par excellence”, the bastion of robust finances, today Goldman Sachs was accused of securities fraud in a civil suit filed Friday by the Securities and Exchange Commission, proving that the bank created and sold mortgage investments that were secretly devised to fail. This rapacious act of greed is tantamount to someone secretly taking insurance on your house and then setting fire to your house! And without any care or worry about the people affected by the fire! Criminals with a license!... If you or I forget to renew our  drivers licence and are stopped we'd be put in jail immediately! Not a criminal act at all but that is what would happen to us. It happenned to my poor 76 yr old neighbor! In Jail for not renewing his license!
Who will go to jail from Goldman Sachs for what they did and continue doing?

And  these criminals of finance destroyed people's lives and savings and then  received bailout money funded by us! And mega-bonuses funded also by us! Indeed it is great to read that they are on the way to “being brought to justice”; I am soooo skeptical! Not for a moment do I believe much will happen: am I a pessimist? On the contrary: I rather consider myself a well informed optimist! Frankly, based on what I have observed and what I see, this is what I predict with a high degree of certainty (and hoping, this time I’m wrong!), that GoldSacks will shine again, and sacks of gold will continue to flow to the corrupt and rapacious system to benefit the rich, the climbers of the Wall of greed, and the well connected. In fact, I predict (sadly) the following:
MY PREDICTION
• None of the criminal GoldSacks boys will see a day behind bars.
• The matter will be resolved with some sort of gentlemanly agreement, with publicized fanfare of fines and no admission of guilt
• A person or persons will be used as visibile, scapegoat making it seem as an easily removed benign cancer and not a systemic deadly infection

Let me know if your prediction differs from mine; I could be open to learning…

US GREED KILLS GREECE

US GREED KILLS GREECE

The entire economy of Greece is about to fall into an abyss of financial ruin craftily created by savvied financial wizards of Wall/War Street: the advisors and traders, the likes of Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase.

Who will suffer? Naturally the hardworking people and the working poor!
Who will benefit? Traders and the financial advisors and rich investors

I’ll spare you the gory details and leave you with telling quotes which appeared today:

• “It’s the blind leading the blind,”
-Sylvain R. Raynes, an expert in structured finance at R&R Consulting in New York.

• “It’s like buying fire insurance on your neighbor’s house — you create an incentive to burn down the house,”- Philip Gisdakis, head of credit strategy at UniCredit in Munich.

• “…traders who own these swaps stand to profit” –NYTimes today

• “In common parlance, these bankers are rats. They gain your trust, you share with them your confidences and they sell you out to the highest bidder .Anyone who has seen Goodfellas knows what happens to rats” .
-Saranac 21s UES February 25th, 2010 7:00 am in the NY Times comments section

Bottom Line: GREED KILLS
